The Cancelation of the Christmas Lighting Festival and FAQ’s
What phase of the Washington reopening plan is Leavenworth in?
Leavenworth is located in Chelan county and is currently in phase 2 with new restrictions in place as of November 17th. For detailed information about business operations with the current restrictions please visit our website https://leavenworth.org/covid-19-phase-2-information/
Is the Christmas Lighting Festival or other events happening on the weekends and in the month of December?
This year due to Covid-19, we are adapting to circumstances and are doing things differently. Our festivals typically draw very large crowds and in our efforts to maximize safety for our community and visitors, we have canceled our Christmas Lighting Festival and countdown for 2020 which was scheduled the first three Saturdays and Sundays of December. Other events in town have been canceled this year as well.
Are your beautiful Christmas Lights going to be on this year?
Yes! We keep our downtown park lights (over half a million and counting) up and on every day from Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day (barring any power or storm issues), there is no pomp and circumstance or big reveal this year though, they will just be on every day from dusk till dawn. So, for those who plan on visiting you will be able to enjoy the lights daily, and for those who will be staying home, we will have a virtual live-feed experience available so you can look at our beautiful lights from the comfort of your home. Pro Tip: A visit midweek or after the new year will bring less crowds and the same beautiful lights!
What safety measures are in place for Covid?
Front Street (the main street in downtown Leavenworth) has been closed to vehicle traffic since July to allow for additional social distancing. Masks are mandatory so visitors should expect to wear masks indoors, as well as outdoors when physical distancing is not possible. Masks and sanitizing stations are also readily available throughout downtown. Please help keep our community safe by wearing your masks and social distancing!
What can we expect for parking and traffic flow on those weekends in December?
Traffic flow in and out of Leavenworth is typically very heavy on the first three Saturdays in December and we STILL expect impacts even with the Lighting Festival being canceled this year. To help mitigate traffic issues, we will have extra sheriff patrols and flaggers at intersections from 12 noon to 8 pm on Saturdays to help with outgoing traffic and safety primarily.
For parking, if you are not in town early in the day on the weekends, parking will be difficult and you will find yourself searching the streets of Leavenworth for a spot. Most paid parking lots tend to fill up before noon. We also anticipate traffic coming into town (especially from the East) on those Saturdays to be slow, particularly if we have any significant weather event. Please be prepared and check conditions on the WSDOT site if traveling over the mountain passes.
Where can I find a restroom in town?
There are 2 available indoor restroom facilities open 7 days a week; one at Front Street Park near the Maipole, and one at 8th & Commercial. We will also place porta-potties near the permanent restrooms located on 8th and Commercial as well as west of the Gazebo.
What are my dining options?
Restaurants are currently closed to inside dining. There are take-out options at most restaurants and some outside dining is allowable. Our restaurants would love to be able to accommodate you of course, but we know that if town is very full, with the current restrictions just imposed there could be wait times for food. In addition, with our reduced capacity and no food booths allowable this year downtown to assist with the availability of food options, everyone getting to eat what they want when they want may be a challenge. This means you really need to plan ahead and please be patient, our restaurants are working hard to accommodate you!

What will my shopping options be like?
Leavenworth has so many great shopping opportunities! All of our stores will be open at a reduced occupancy of 25%, so please, wear your masks and socially distance while shopping indoors so everyone can have a positive experience! A stroll through our magical town and taking in all of the amazing one-of-kind treasures that Leavenworth is famous for is sure to please. We recommend checking off your Christmas shopping list here with us, you can even shop online if you prefer! We have so many treasures for you to take home with you.

Is there public transportation?
Our local bus company, Link Transit, has free shuttles running 7 days a week out of their park and ride location behind our Safeway grocery store from approximately 11 am-7 pm. If you park there and ride the shuttle into town, there are 3 stops on the way all getting you to the downtown area. For more information on the link schedule.
What can we do for recreational fun while we are here?

From 26 km of groomed Nordic track, to winter wonderland sleigh rides, thrilling snowmobiling, epic tubing and sledding, to downhill skiing and snowshoeing right in town, there is no shortage of winter fun to be had!
