Hiking the Enchantments

The Enchantments are the crown jewel of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness — a chain of granite-cradled alpine lakes high above Leavenworth, and one of the most sought-after hikes in the country.

Access is limited to protect it: day hikers self-issue a wilderness permit at the trailhead, and overnight stays from May 15 to October 31 are awarded through the recreation.gov permit lottery.

This is fragile alpine terrain, so travel gently — stay on trail, pack everything out, and follow Leave No Trace.

ON THE WENATCHEE

Floating the River

Tubing the Wenatchee through town is the classic Leavenworth way to cool off. Put in at Icicle Bridge for a roughly two-mile float — or at the Fish Hatchery for about four miles, before its lot gate closes in early July — and take out at Barn Beach or the East Leavenworth boat launch. On summer weekends and holidays, a free City river shuttle loops between the boat ramp and the put-ins.

Float Smart: wear a life jacket, stay sober on the water, and go easy in late summer — low water and spawning salmon mean it may be time to hang up the tube.

PERMITS & PASSES

Passes & Permits

Most Forest Service trailheads require a Northwest Forest Pass to park. Overnight trips in the Enchantments run on a lottery permit.

  • Northwest Forest Pass: $5/day or $30/year — buy online or at the Willkommen Center.
  • Enchantments overnights (May 15–Oct 31): lottery permit via Recreation.gov; applications open mid-February.
  • Day hiking in the Enchantments requires a free self-issued permit, available at the trailhead — and the thru-hike is a huge day. Know your limits.

Colchuck, Stuart, and Eightmile lakes sit in the Enchantments permit zone — self-issue a free day-use permit at the trailhead, and leave the dog at home.

Giving a Schnitzel means caring for the trails, rivers, and wild places we all share. Look for our recreation ambassadors at trailheads and river access points — they have maps, supplies, and swag.

Summer Recreation FAQ

The Waterfront Park Trail starts right downtown and links footbridges to Blackbird Island along the Wenatchee River. Icicle Gorge Trail, 25 minutes up Icicle Creek Road, is a gentle 4-mile creekside loop the whole family can do.

Day hiking around Leavenworth is generally permit-free, but most Forest Service trailheads require a Northwest Forest Pass to park. Overnight trips in the Enchantments between May 15 and October 31 require a limited-entry permit awarded by lottery — see hiketheenchantments.org for details.

Whitewater rafting on the Wenatchee typically runs May through July, when snowmelt delivers Class III rapids. By mid-to-late July flows mellow and the river becomes a classic lazy float and tubing run through August. Details on our rafting & kayaking page.

The Reindeer Farm and Adventure Park, mini golf, the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery, paddling at Waterfront Park, and river tubing are all easy wins with kids — and most are within a few minutes of downtown.

Yes — most trails around Leavenworth welcome leashed dogs. The big exception is the Enchantments permit area — including the Colchuck, Stuart, and Eightmile lake trails — where dogs are not allowed. Pack water for hot summer afternoons.
