Fall is Leavenworth’s busiest and most celebrated season, and for good reason. The Bavarian storefronts pair with golden larch trees and crisp mountain air, the town’s two biggest festivals both land in September and October, and the crowds that fill Front Street are proof that a lot of people already know this is the best time of year to visit. Here’s how to time the foliage, work the festival calendar, and fill in the days around it.

When fall actually hits Leavenworth

Meaningful color starts showing up in September, but the valley’s signature show, the western larches turning gold, typically peaks in the first two weeks of October. That window narrows to about 7 to 10 days at any single elevation, and higher trails like Colchuck Lake and Stuart Lake tend to turn before lower elevation hikes do. Because the peak is short and shifts by up to two weeks year to year depending on weather, check current trail reports before you drive out rather than locking in dates months in advance.

Two of Leavenworth’s biggest festivals happen in the fall

Autumn Leaf Festival: Leavenworth’s oldest festival, established in 1964, held the last full weekend in September in downtown Leavenworth. It’s a free event celebrating the turning leaves, with food booths, music in the park, a car show, a kids’ parade, and a Saturday Grand Parade at noon as the headline moment.

Oktoberfest: The bigger draw for most visitors, spread across three separate weekends in October, October 2 to 3, 9 to 10, and 16 to 17 in 2026. Three stages run through the weekends, the Festhalle main stage, the Bierzelt tent, and the Gazebo Stage at Front Street Park, connected by an outdoor street fair of food, beer, and vendors. Each Saturday opens with the Festzug parade at 11:45 a.m. and a keg tapping at 2 p.m. in Front Street Park. Local breweries pour alongside imported German beers, and a Kinderplatz keeps things family friendly with a Ferris wheel, games, and a root beer garden, free with festival admission.

Oktoberfest weekends are among the first lodging dates to sell out each year, book 3 to 4 months ahead if a specific weekend matters to you, and buy festival tickets online in advance rather than counting on gate sales.

What to do beyond the festivals

Fall works even on the weekends between festivals. A larch hike is the obvious draw, but the valley’s wineries and tasting rooms are also worth an afternoon once the summer crowds thin out, and a walk down Front Street feels different with the half-timbered buildings framed by turning leaves instead of summer flowers. Shoulder weekends in September and early October, the ones that miss both Autumn Leaf Festival and Oktoberfest, tend to be quieter and easier to book than the signature weekends, while still catching good color and cool weather.

Days get noticeably shorter as fall goes on, so build hikes and outdoor plans around the earlier sunset, and expect mornings and evenings to be cold even when the afternoon is comfortable.

Planning a fall trip

Book lodging as early as you can if your dates touch Autumn Leaf Festival or any Oktoberfest weekend, both are among the first weekends of the year to sell out. If you’d rather stay flexible, a midweek fall visit gets you the foliage and crisp weather without competing with festival crowds at all.

Pack real layers. Fall temperatures in the valley typically run 45 to 65°F, but mornings can be considerably colder than that range suggests, and afternoon sun still gets warm on a clear day. If a hike is part of the plan, buy a Northwest Forest Pass ahead of time and check current trail and road conditions before you drive out, since larch season access can shift quickly. Expect Front Street to be at its most crowded of the year during festival weekends, so plan extra time for parking and walking between spots.
